Ewen started playing violin and piano at the age of 5 with the Etobicoke Suzuki School of Music. Along with his musical volunteer work at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, he has competed in string quartets and performed in a wide variety of genres on several instruments. After picking up the French horn in middle school, Ewen decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in performance at McGill University in Montreal, where he studied with Nadia Côté. Upon his return to Oakville, he broadened his musical scope to include traditional Japanese instruments such as taiko and shamisen, which he still studies under Nagata Shachu in Scarborough.
