Music has always been a very important part of Brian’s life. He has been playing the trumpet since Grade 4. Brian studied music at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Toronto (Bachelor of Music in Performance Degree, Honours Standing). He completed his Teaching Certification with the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University.
As a musician, Brian has experience with the Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Wilfred Laurier University Symphony, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton. He has conducted the Halton Youth Symphony Orchestra, High Rendition Jazz, the Halton Junior Jazz Honour Band and the Senior Winds Honour Band.
Brian became a music teacher in 2003. After a few years as an elementary school music teacher, Brian became the head music teacher at T. A. Blakelock High School in southwest Oakville, Ontario. Brian guided both schools to multiple awards at the provincial and national levels.
During his 13 year tenure at Blakelock, the music program continued to grow each year. Some highlights include performance tours to: Boston, including a performance at the Berklee School of Music; Chicago, competing in the North Shore Concert Band Festival and earning first place honours out of all high school bands; Cuba, including a joint public performance with National Concert Band of Cuba; China, where they played on the Great Wall of China; Halifax, earning a Gold at the Atlantic Music Festival; Ottawa, where a record 140 student musicians from the school competed in four ensembles at Musicfest Canada; and another trip to Boston, earning a Platinum at the Great East Music Festival. On the strength of their achievements, this high school band under Brian’s leadership was invited to play Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2019, where they earned a Gold in the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory Invitational competition.
Brian helps to support the development of young musicians in the ensembles he has conducted. Brian focuses on his musicians as learners regardless of their age and experience. His bands have recently earned silvers and golds at the regional and national levels.
In 2017 and 2018, Brian twice received an Inspire Award from the Halton District School Board, having been nominated by parents. In May 2017, Brian received the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director Award from Musicfest Canada, the national competition.
Brian currently serves as teacher and band conductor for International Community School in Addis Ababa, Ethopia.
