Culture Days

What is Culture Days?

Culture Days is a national celebration of arts and culture. At the end of each September, millions of people attend thousands of free participatory arts and culture events across the country both in-person and online. Culture Days programs invite the public to get hands-on and behind-the-scenes to highlight the importance of arts and culture in our communities. Learn more about Culture Days here.

As a non-profit in the arts, Bandology is a big believer in making art accessible to all by offering free events in our community. This year, Bandology will be hosting three events with Culture Days. We hope to see you there!

Around the World in Song: Music Scavenger Hunt

For this event, participants will receive a passport which they will then be tasked with filling up on a scavenger hunt for answers. There will be a variety of music related activities designed to teach musical facts and theory in a fun, family-friendly activity.

When: Saturday, September 23 from 2 to 3:30pm

Where: the Gymnasium, Iroquois Ridge Community Centre, 1051 Glenashton Drive, Oakville

More information can be found here.

From Flute to Tuba: An Interactive Exploration of Music Instruments

For this dynamic, multi-generational event, Bandology will partner with local community musicians and organizations to host an interactive behind the scenes look at the composition of a typical band. This workshop will be an exciting combination of performances and demonstrations, with experienced musicians taking turns to explain their instrument, its role in the band and its history. Audience members of all ages will be encouraged to ask questions about music, instruments and careers and will learn about the long term benefits that music provides.

When: Sunday, October 1 from 2 to 3pm

Where The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy Street, Oakville

This a free ticketed event. Please register for your ticket here.

Trumpets and Drumsticks and Flutes, Oh My! Exploring the Instrument Petting Zoo

Our workshop will focus on introducing participants to the wonders of music through our new instrument petting zoo. The petting zoo features child-friendly starter instruments and is designed to be accessible to a younger audience. Led by trained music instructors, the petting zoo will also feature a demonstration of a wide variety of percussion instruments. Participants will have the chance to test out an instrument of their choosing.

When: Saturday, October 14 from 1-4pm

Where: Program Room 2, Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Road, Oakville

More information can be found here.

What Music Means to Me: A Participatory Art Installation

This art installation will be a traveling participatory mural that celebrates “what music means to me.” Music plays an instrumental role in many people’s lives and has been proven to improve mental health, test scores and overall well being. Our staff will take the piece (which will be created on a large butcher paper roll) to all of our Culture Days events and participants will be able to add their take on “what music means to me” to the mural.

You can find our event at Iroquois Ridge on September 23, at the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts on October 1 and at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre on October 14.

Can’t make it to one of our events? We aren’t the only ones running Culture Days programming this fall! Culture Days runs from September 22 to October 15. Be sure to check out one of the awesome events taking place during that time. Go to the Culture Days event page for more information.
